The Buzz with Bees

Spring has now sprung up on us and I know many of your lovely gardeners are out and about weeding your gardens ,
Please spare a thought for the bees,

Did you know that Dandelion ( yes that Annoying yellow flower plant ) is the first food for Bees and Bumble Bees ( yes mother natures wonder insect) , If you can spare a thought for them now that they are out and about looking for food to start their new year on please leave the dandelions for a while

I know what you are thinking , But bees arent that great , Maybe you are one of those people who don’t even eat honey

Well did you know Manuka Honey is A wonder Product , It is used all around the world for multiple of things like Wound dressing , Settling stomachs , And yes sweetening your tea

One of our staff uses it when she is nurturing little orphan animals that have lost their mums , This is because the honey is a natural Sweetener and helps get them to take the milk without upsetting their tummies.

Manuka honey contains two ingredients, MG, and hydrogen peroxide, which make it a powerful antibiotic and antibacterial agent. MG (methylglyoxal) is found in most honey, but the highest concentration is found in the nectar of the Manuka flowers. Another study also shows that this type of honey has significant antibacterial properties and the higher the MG number is the Better it is for you .

 

While raw unfiltered honeys already contain a well-balanced and nutritious profile, Manuka honey is said to contain 4x the nutritional content of conventional honeys. Here’s a profile of raw unfiltered honey:

  • Amino acids
  • B vitamins (B6, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid)

Heres a great fact you can tell your friends , The oldest honey was discovered 170 Kms west of Tbilisi and is believed to have been made by bees in Georgia around 5500 years ago , The oldest honey to date before this discovery was in tutankahamens tomb  . But this honey predates the Egyptian honey but a whopping 2000 years. And though it was old it still tasted like honey.

The other wonderful thing bees bring us is their Bees wax, This is used in Multiple Products  from beauty creams, candles , balms.

  • 30 percent digestible carbohydrates
  • 26 percent sugars (mainly fructose and glucose)
  • 23 percent protein (including 10 percent of essential amino acids)
  • 5 percent lipids (including essential fatty acids)
  • 2 percent phenolic compounds (including flavonoids)
  • 1.6 percent minerals (including calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium, iron, copper, zinc, manganese, silicon and selenium)
  • 0.6 percent water-soluble vitamins and acids (including B1, B2, B6 and C)
  • 0.1 percent fat-soluble vitamins (including vitamins A, E and D)

So while you are out gardening think of Mother Natures little Gardener and try to leave a few flowers for the humble little bee , Try to limit your use of Pesticides as those that can and will kill wasps will also kill the humble little bee , and Many that kills the basic insect will also kill our bees, Try to go Natural if you can , If you are using pesticides please check with your garden center to see if they are bee safe , Also Keep In mind that the weather is going to be getting warmer , If you have a garden thing of adding a bird bath , Not only do the birds love these but the bees will visit these as well and make use of the water that you are providing , This will keep them hydrated and happy

Because remember with out them out their buzzing around we wouldn’t have many of the wonderful plants that we have and Most of our fruit and vegetables  wont last long as they need pollinators like the humble little Bee ,  these are things like apples , almonds, blueberries , watermelon,Cherries, Peaches , Rapeseed  Common producer of Canola Oil, Avocados, Cucumbers, Cransberries, Onions, Blackberries, Grapefruit, Oranges, Raspberries, Cantaloupe, Pumpkins, Pears and Plums

And I am sure many parents amoung us has seen the Bee Movie , Maybe it wont be as drastic as they showed but Many of our wonderful flowers would vanish and what would the world be like without all that beauty in it.
