Today we are going to be talking about the Elephant in the room that is the bane of many peoples existence …. The COLD SORE  / HERPES …… and its related cousins ….

I know for years many look at the common cold sore and instantly think that the person is dirty , sleeps around etc. … What would you say if I told you that 3 out of 4 people have suffered from a cold sore in their life .

Did you also know that its related to chicken pox … bet you didn’t realise that … They are all cousins .

Chicken pox are caused by the VZV strand of the Herpes group and is also the cause of shingles…..If you had chicken pox as a child you are less likely to get them again ( I say this because one of our staff has a brother who has gotten chicken pox 7 times ) … If you haven’t had it and you are an adult then it can be extremely risky for you … You will get very sick and there has been documented cases of people loosing their sight and other things from the chicken pox virus…. If you are unsure if you have had it , You can get a blood test done that will test to see if you have the antibodies for chickenpox and then you can go from there. If your little one has it don’t give them anti inflammatory like  voltaren as this can cause other issues later on.

The common cold sore is caused by the HSV-1 virus … It can also be caused by the HSV-2 virus … I know

what your thinking aren’t they the STD viruses that cause genital herpes and that my kids are now getting vaccinated against… Well yes in a round about way … Most cold sores are caused by the HSV-1 virus and most genital herpes are caused by the HSV-2 virus … so what ever you do if you have a cold sore NO ORAL SEX … this is because it cold sores spread to moist areas and can develop in places like your nose , mouth , tongue and throat and yes even down in the neither regions …

Sadly once you have the virus you have it permanently but there are things you can do to help calm an out break of the symptoms and help make life easier for you.

First of all learn the warning signs that you are getting a cold sore … Yes that tingling itching feeling …. You can start treating the cold sore from this point if you have some of that over the counter treatments .

You can also treat it with our Lemon Balm lip balm this is because the lip balm has lemon balm in it . Lemon Balm  is part of the Melissa Officinalis family and therefore great for cold sores .

If you suffer from them often and you want to take something for it , A good thing to take is Lysine … This is used by the spca for cats with feline herpes and also is being trialled by some rabbit breeders to see if it helps halt the spread of RCD in their rabbits. It works wonders with Viruses and has been used for a long time as a form of antidote for feline  Herpes and also in humans who suffer from the virus. Taking this product does help halt the virus in its tracks. It wont CURE the virus as there is no cure for it , It will Halt the Outbreak or Flare up that you are currently experiencing with the Virus. Eating Food rich in Lysine also helps your bodys immune system at times when its being taxed therefore helping limit the risk of an episode happening.

Another thing you have to watch as a suffer is the things that can trigger an episode , you have to remember that some triggers might be the same as yours and some may be different but the trick is to watch out what triggers them and then avoid them . For many a trigger is stress …. We live in a very stressful world and its good to find something to help you unwind and distress as this will help limit this factor in the whole saga.

stay calm

Another thing is watching what you eat , Things with Arginine can aggravate the herpes virus … this is for both the HSV-1 and HSV-2 so avoiding things that have this in it will help with this trigger , Now foods with this in it are things like Chocolate , Nuts , Natural grains . I am not saying don’t eat these but just be aware that these can aggravate the virus and make sure your prepared.

You also need to watch with cold sores is cracked lips , Wind and sun burn on the lips  can trigger an episode so it’s a great idea to make sure that you are putting on the lip balms … DON’T SHARE YOUR LIP BALMS OR MAKEUP … even if you don’t suffer from them or your friend hasn’t got one at the moment you don’t know if they secretly have had one in the past. Also make sure that if you have had a cold sore that you do no use the same make up that you used the day before the break out  or while you had a break out , This is because the makeup could secretly store the virus and you can be leading yourself to another outbreak .

I normally change up some of my make up every 3 months … MASCARA and eye liner especially and lipsticks as well unless of course I haven’t used them … I have plain makeup ( neutral colours) set aside for when I have an episode and have these well marked . I still change these up when required and normally get rid of them once I have used them for the week of the cold sore .

So basically if you suffer from any form of the Herpes Virus you aren’t alone , There are a lot of people out there that do .. Eat healthy , Avoid stress and other triggers, Take lysine wither it be powder or in capsules and we hope you have a good and fun time without any outbreaks.

If you have a cat also suffering form Feline Herpes Virus you can also treat it with Lysine … The spca find the powder easier as they put it in their food and away you go. People with horse also use it to help boost their horses Immune system when they are in situations of Stress.
